What is firmware?

I’ve always had trouble understanding what a firmware is. It never occured to me wholly.
Few minutes back, i read on Gamasutra that digital market and web browser for 3DS would be available on day one and Nintendo told Eurogamer that both features would still require a separate update to implement, not being part of the 3DS’ “initial firmware”, but that the update would be ready “on day one.
So i wanted to know what a firmware is again. I’ve been lazy so i only looked it up on wikipedia. Still, it’s been very useful. And i found out that even IEEE notes that:
(1) This term is sometimes used to refer only to the hardware device or only to the computer instructions or data, but these meanings are deprecated. (2) The confusion surrounding this term has led some to suggest that it be avoided altogether.”
The term’s boundaries are obviously vague. It can intersect either with software or hardware more. It’s not as low-level as hardware but at the same time it’s rather embedded that you can’t interfere with firmware as easy as you can do with software.
